Domaine De L Etoile

At Anse jonchée, in the southeast, high in the hills ocerlooking vieux Grand port Bay, lies Domaine de Chasseur. It contains of 3000 acres of tropical forest inhabited by Javanese stags, wild boars, monkeys and birds,. Among which is the early extinct Mauritian Kestrel. Domaine Les Pailles

Ten minutes from South of Port-Louis, the capital, nested in the Pailles Valley, lies the nature park of Domaine Les Pailles, stretching over 1500 hectares. The Domaine also offers adventurous rides in 4x4s or horse rides. The five restaurants of the Domaine represent excellent multicultural cuisines: The Fu Xiao – Chinese, Dolce vita – Italian, Indra – Indian, Canelle – European and last but not least, The Clos St Louis – European and Creole. Champ De Mars

The “Champ de Mars” was founded in 1812 by the English Colonel Draper, and is the most ancient hippodrome of the south hemisphere and the second in the world. From March to December, the horse-race season attracts thousands of Mauritians and visitors mainly for betting. It was at Champ de Mars that the Independence of Mauritius was announced in 1968.

La Citadel – Fort Adelaide

Built in 1835 by the British to watch out for potential riots in Port-Louis before the abolition of slavery. It is situated on a hill overlooking the city and the harbour.

Eureka-Maison De Créole

An old residence built in 1830, contains antique furniture of different periods, has more than 100 doors and windows, found in the midst of an enchanting park of 5 acre, and lined on one side with Moka waterfall and on the other, with Ory Mountain. Eureka is an essential stop during your stay in Mauritius if you wish to immense yourself in tropical sweetness and move a century backwards to the time of Paul and Virginie.

Trou Aux Cerfs

Mauritius was formed after intense volcanic activity as proved by the Trou aux Cerfs crater, on the plateau of Curepipe. The extinct volcano is 85 metres deep with a diameter of 200 metres and offers an exceptional view of the island. The site is also a historical spot. Freed slaves had chosen it to cultivate the land.

Plaines Champagne

It has a superb view of Black River mountain ranges and the sea lining the horizon. Plaines Champagne is part of a natural reserve area which still contains some wildlife.

Aventure Du Sucre

L’aventure du Sucre is an extraordinary expo situated in an old sugar cane factory that has been transformed into a modern museum explaining the history of the Mauritian sugar cane industry and its different products derived from the sugar cane plants.

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden

The Garden is one of the oldest Botanic Garden in the southern hemisphere. The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden dates back to the French period. In 1736, the French governor, Mahé de Labourdonnais, chose to set up his domain around the present Main Gate at Pamplemousses. In 1767 of the French intendent, Pierre Poivre also introduced vegetables, fruits and flowers from all over the world. Amongst these plants were some of the most prized species of the time: namely nutmegs (Myristica fragans) and cloves (Syzichium aromaticum) from the Malaccas. These species are still present in the Spice Corner at the Garden. After Poivre’s departure, the Garden was administered by Nicolas Céré (1775 – 1810). He traced the main avenues and had several ponds built, notably the Giant Water Lily Pond, now filled with spectacular Victoria amazonica. After the French period, the Garden faced difficulties during the first thirty years of British rule over the island. The Garden was revived with the arrival of James Duncan as Director in 1849. A large collection of palms was introduced including the majestic Royal Palm (Roystonia regia).The Botanic Garden which was formerly known as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Pamplemousses was renamed on the 18 September 1988 that is on the 88th Birth Anniversary of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius and later Governor General of Mauritius. His funerary monument (Samadhi) is found near the Chateau de Mon Plaisir as well as a commemorative Monument consisting of a fresh water pond crowned by a lotus flower with the inscription: ‘In beloved Memory of the Father of the Nation’. Since the year 2000, a Trust under the aegis of the Ministry of Agro Industry and Food Security runs the Garden. The five objectives of the SSR Botanic Garden Trust are namely historical, cultural, recreational, educational and conservation.
